Papa Mahavir was stricter than Aamir’s Dangal Version: Geeta Phogat

In an India Today exclusive, Geeta Phogat along with father Mahavir Singh Phogat and Babita Kumari spoke about how authentic Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal was.

In an exclusive interview with India Today deputy editor Sushant Mehta, Commonwealth Games’ gold medal-winning wrestler Geeta Phogat said her father and coach Mahavir Singh Phogat was sterner and stricter than how Aamir portrayed the man in Dangal.

The entire Dangal team comprising of %image_alt%Aamir Khan, Sakshi Tanwar and director Nitesh Tiwari among others had sat down for a chat with India Today. Accompanying them was Mahavir Singh Phogat, the man Dangal is based on, along with Mahavir’s daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari.

While Aamir Khan spoke about the preparation that went into playing Mahavir Singh Phogat, the Phogat family spoke about how authentic or not Nitesh Tiwari’s film was.

When the Phogat daughters were asked about how close Aamir’s portrayal of Mahavir Singh Phogat was to the real Mahavir, Geeta said, “Real life mein isse kahi guna zyada hota.” (In real life, what happened to us was bigger in scale than what is shown in Dangal)

Geeta added that they would often get beaten if they did not train or showed laziness during training.

And well, the man himself Mahavir was stunned by Aamir Khan’s drastic physical transformation to play the character.

“Nobody can gain and lose thirty kilos that fast, not even a wrestler. I am stunned,” said Mahavir Singh Phogat.

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal is presently running in theatres and has grossed Rs 176.98 crore in six days domestically.
